Central Bank tourism statistics for January to Sept 98
Increases in tourist arrivals 1996: 1,189,818 1997: 1,354,014 +3.8%  1998: 1,482,081  +9.5%
English market  1996: 89,670 1997:163,697 +82.6%  1998: 156,287 –4,5%
In October the English count was 16,124 compared to 28,460 in October last year, a drop of 42%. Meanwhile, the hurricane caused a drop in tourist arrivals of only 18%.

Projections for 1998  while last year the sector grew by 9.1%, this year’s growth is expected to be only 6%. The number of arrivals for the year has been re-projected at a 7.2% increase instead of a 14.2% increase. Decreases are attributed to the hurricane.
Losses from the hurricane The Central Bank estimates operational losses for the tourism industry at RD$1,500 million. CEPAL estimates hurricane damages to facilities at RD$2,235.4 million. Total = RD$3,735.4 million. Total damage to the country is estimated at 15 billion pesos.
