Those unfamiliar with the Dominican Republic often inquire concerning the country’s political stability, safety and state of the overall infrastructure.

The DR population of some 8 million souls (life expectancy 70.7 years) enjoys totally democratic and entirely stable government. It is consistently designated as the most stable of the Latin American countries by the U.S. organizations that develop these types of rankings. The judiciary is independent and the crime rate compares favorably with the US.

The country operates under a presidential system with a Chamber of Deputies and a Senate. Elections have been held every four years since 1961 when patriots assassinated Trujillo, the Dictator for the previous 30 odd years. Most major countries including the US and Canada have embassies and consulates in the country.

The annual GDP of about US$40 billion has grown over the past few years at a rate of about 7% net of the average inflation of about 6%. Only 1% DDP is spent on the military. There are 25 television stations and 36 airports.

Puerto Plata International Airport is serviced from several US locations including several flights daily from Miami and New York. Several charter carriers operate direct non-stop scheduled flights from Toronto, Montreal and other major Canadian cities several times weekly.
