The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean between
Cuba and Puerto Rico. It shares the island of Hispaniola with
the Republic of Haiti. Haiti occupies the western third of
the island, with some 7 million inhabitants. The Dominican
Republic occupies the eastern two thirds of Hispaniola, with
about the same population.
Puerto Plata is the largest city and the gateway to the
north coast of the Dominican Republic, with an international
sea port and modern international airport. Puerto Plata is
the center of commerce for the north coast and the capital
city of the province of the same name. Tourism is the
prominent industry, among the well known resort areas along
this coastline are Sosua, Cabarete, Rio San Juan, Cabrera,
Las Terrenas and Samana. All these are to the east of the
airport. To the west lie Costambar, Cofresi and Luperón the
latter being a popular place for boaters.
